The use of Polygraph by Government Agencies in the United States commenced in 1921 and slowly spread into commercial use. By the late 1970's commercial use of the instrument was widespread with hundreds of Polygraph companies providing their services to many thousands of organisations in all sectors of trade and industry, as well as Law enforcement offices and is now widely used in the UK.
Modern use of Polygraph is generally in one of five main categories.
- Legal Defence, some UK lawyers are now currently arranging for such test to be carried out on their clients who are charged with a criminal act. A number of the said tests are showing that the person is innocent. We wait with baited breath to see how the evidence is proved in Court and if it is willingly accepted as evidence.
- Pre-employment Screening, to verify that information provided by prospective employees is truthful.
- Honesty Maintenance, to help employers to contain and eliminate staff theft and dishonesty.
- Specific Examinations, to identify the perpetrators of specific incidents, such as the theft of cash, property of information, murder, rape etc.
- To establish if a spouse or partner has committed adultery.
As an example, since 1982 our 'Polygraphist' has carried out many hundreds of tests for a wide variety of clients, ranging from Foreign Governments and National Security Agencies, Multi National Corporations and Banks, Tribunals and private individuals. All clients are protected by confidentiality agreements, although cases which have been disclosed to the public, by the clients include tests on convicted murderer James Robinson (Carl Bridgewater, the newspaper boy of Yew Tree Farm), Christopher Craig (convicted murderer of PC Miles in the 'Let him have it Chris' case), Sally Croft and Susan Hagan (extradited to USA for supposedly conspiring to assassinate the Attorney General of Oregon), the Mehta Brothers in Bombay, accused of bribing Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in 1993 and Colin Stagg who had been accused and found guilty of the Rachel Nickell murder. At the time we conducted the test on Colin Stage he was the prime suspect prior to his conviction, our test which was published in the National Press, it proved that he was innocent. It was many years later that test was confirmed as being ‘correct’ as he subsequently freed after the true murderer had been identified.
